Oaks, the Tower, and Bayliss at Mt. Auburn Cemetery
580 Mt. Auburn Street, Cambridge, Mass.
Friday, April 17, starting at 1:00 pm
Public transportation / carpooling advised
During this visit to Mount Auburn Cemetery - famous for its beautiful landscape and its long history - we will make a brief stop at Jonathan Bayliss's gravestone in the Jacobs family plot, walk over to the 62-foot observation tower built in the 1850s, and be treated to a private tour by oak expert Dennis Collins.
Mount Auburn's Washington Tower is the place in Bayliss's novel Gloucestertide where Caleb secretly meets his lover Lilian.
Dennis, horticultural curator at Mount Auburn, will talk to us about the oak, Bayliss's favorite tree.
For information about Mount Auburn's history, the many famous people buried there, and its beautiful grounds, please visit mountauburn.org.
Please wear comfortable footwear and dress for the weather.
This special program is part of the centenary celebration of Bayliss's birth in 1926.
